Staff Reviews from Indeed

Great place to build experience

Intervention Specialist (Former Employee) - Mount Clemens, MI - July 4, 2020

FYI is great for getting hands on experience in the social work/counseling/mental health field. You work with teens from diverse backgrounds and learn to lead group discussions, how to effectively talk with teens and how to handle crisis situations. One big thing here is you must have patience. You meet some really great kids and hear their stories. The job can be challenging at times because you never quite know how the day will play out. Sometimes, there's a lot to juggle at once. The kids have some tough backgrounds and can have a hard time dealing with certain things like the rules, other clients, being away from home and getting into the activities. But there are a lot of things many really enjoy about FYI. Staff is supportive and helpful.

Compensation

Though employees are not compensated well the real reward comes from a supportive employee team and helping teenagers / young adults & their families.

Great people, Great experience

Intervention Specialist (Former Employee) - Mt. Clemens, MI - Basic Center - August 19, 2019

Family Youth Interventions is a great place to receive irreplaceable experience for those going into the human services field. You will be exposed to high intensity crisis situations, trained appropriately, and given the opportunity to work with awesome teenagers! The management staff at FYI are approachable and lovely to work with. They understand the intensity of the work and want to support you however they can in navigating whatever challenges you may face. There are times when staff have differences, but they are handled in a professional manner, giving everyone the chance to express their concerns. I left FYI having gained friends and colleagues that I know I can count on no matter what.

I enjoyed working here - I was able to get valuable experience in working with the teenage/young adult population. The flexible scheduling was amazing for being in school at the time, and management was always supportive of staff.

Wonderful opportunity for growth

Transitional Living Specialist (Former Employee) - Mt. Clemens, MI - June 12, 2019

Working at FYI's Transitional Living Program provided a better opportunity for growth than I ever even expected. Notably, it helped me develop assertiveness and flexibility in guiding the teens to meet program expectations and achieve their goals. It also provided many opportunities to improve my crisis intervention skills, as teens arrive with diverse backgrounds and traumatic experiences. It's not by any means an easy job, but it does offer a lot of opportunities to just spend time with the teens being an available support and showing them that they are valued as individuals, whether it was sharing a meal, playing games together, or watching a movie. While the pay isn't ideal, it worked well as a part-time job during school and what it afforded me in experience and knowledge was priceless. There is rarely a "typical" day at the TLP, but ensuring that the teens are meeting program standards and requirements in a concrete element of every shift. From my perspective, the biggest challenge was relying on all of that detailed information to constantly change hands. There are a lot of details to keep up with and that's something I struggled with at times from both the providing and receiving end. With all TLSs only being part-time, that consistency is hard to achieve. However, we were always making strides to improve our methods of communication and I saw a notable improvement in efficiency throughout my time there. Every shift change includes a detailed debriefing with the incoming staff and I can't even articulate how valuable it was to have such a supportive team to process and brainstorm with. The men and women that I worked with were some of the most down-to-earth, compassionate, and knowledgeable people that I've worked with in any capacity. Without a doubt, the TLP is a great place to make a difference in the lives of teens going through the tough transition to independence, and also a great place to grow as a person and a professional!

Incredible Workplace

Intervention Specialist (Current Employee) - Mount Clemens, MI - October 14, 2016

I love my job. I get to work with youth, age 12-17, and help them be better people. They learn life skills and work on ways to communicate, interact, understand, and cope better in their everyday lives. My program manager and program director are extremely hands on and always available if you need to speak with either of them. My coworkers are dedicated to their jobs and trying to get our youths to learn as much as possible.
